Chihuahuas are popular small dogs and are named from their place of origin, the Mexican state of Chihuahua. DNA tests suggest direct lineage to ancient pre-Columbian Mexican dogs. Chihuahuas exhibit varied morphology, including head shape, coat length and color (even within the same litter). The deer-headed variety has an elongated, flat skull with a greater than 90 degree stop (transition from forehead to muzzle), long muzzle, wide-set eyes, large ears, long legs, and is usually larger and heavier (about 12 lbs.) than the apple-headed variety (see BC-348). Popular as pets, these dogs are less likely to suffer from breathing issues than apple-headed Chihuahuas. Most Chihuahuas are born with a "molera," an incompletely fused cranium (called a fontanelle in humans), which presents no health problems.
